MongoDB 3.0 will be the new version, renaming from 2.8

A few minutes ago it became official by Eliot Horowitz through the official MongoDB blog: Next MongoDB version renamed from 2.8 to 3.0

After a brief introduction on the meaning of the version numbers of MongoDB, Eliot explains the main reason for this change is because the upcoming release represents a step-function release, and this change deserves to be recognized with a major release number.

Update 01/23: The latest development version v3.0 RC-6 has been released and is available for download. We highly recommend to checking out the changelog available on JIRA

The stable version is very close so stay tuned and please welcome MongoDB 3.0!
